Stryj Whitewater
River Stryj is a mountain river in Lviv region, the right tributary of Dniester (despite the fact that at the point of confluence with Dniester it is bigger). The source of river Stryj is located on the western slope of JavornĂky Mt. in High Beskydy in Carpathians.
Stryj River mostly is a mountain river which flows through amazing nature sights of narrow mountain valleys. Stryj is a perfect river for whitewater adventure. The width of the channels is about 10-30 m in the upper reaches and 150 m in the lower reaches. Stryj’s largest tributary is Opir River.

Stryj River confluences (left tribunary) with Dniester (right tribunary) near the town of Hodoriv, 10 km down from town Zhydachov. For Stryj River typical are spring and sometimes summer-autumn floods. The average outflow is 17 km from the mouth - 45.2 m3/s, maximum - 890 m3/sec. Stryj river is mainly frozen from late November to mid March.
Shores of River Stryj mainly are forestry, there are numerous settlements. Along River Stryj there are some important towns: Turka, Stryj, Zhydachiv.
River Stryj became popular recently among whitewater tourists - rafters. The most popular whitewater route is from the mouth of Opir River, near village Mezhybrody to village Rozhirche where the cave monastery could be found. Along the river there are some rapids and other obstacles. However, Stryj River is only of the 2nd category out of 6. Ther best time for whitewater rafting down Stryj River is from the mid-March, but in fact the water level is high enough almost all season arround.
